6 Foods That You Should Never Freeze

To freeze or not to freeze, that is the question.  Take a look at these 6 common foods that don’t hold up well in the freezer.

Salad Greens

If you want crisp, flavorful, salad greens – don’t put them in the freezer. Salad greens become soft, wilt and even lose their flavor when frozen. Salad greens are best stored in the refrigerator. First wash and dry your greens and then wrap them in a paper towel and put them in a plastic bag before putting them in the fridge.

Eggs

Considering freezing some eggs for later use? Don’t do it! The liquids inside the egg will harden, expand, and crack the shell. If you’re lucky you’ll have unusable eggs, if you’re not so lucky you’ll have a gooey, eggy mess inside your freezer accompanied by a rotten smell.

Raw Potatoes

Freezing raw potatoes just doesn’t work. Potatoes have a high water content. When frozen, ice crystals form inside the potatoes and then when they that the potato ends up mushy and gross. Potatoes are best stored in a cool, dry place – never in the freezer.

Cheese

Cheese lovers beware – you should never freeze a cheese. When frozen, hard cheeses become crumbly and weird. Soft cheeses fair even worse in the freezer, losing their texture and separating into a cheesy mess. Cheese has a long shelf life in the refrigerator and that’s the best place to store them.

Yogurt

Believe it or not, putting yogurt in the freezer does not make for delicious frozen yogurt. In fact, freezing yogurt, greek or otherwise, will cause the yogurt to lose it’s texture and the liquids will separate. While you could still use the yogurt for cooking, it’s definitely not something you’ll be interested in eating.

Fried Foods

Do you love the crispy, crunchy goodness of fried foods? It will all but disappear if you freeze them.  Fried batters become soft, mushy, and lose their flavor when frozen. French fries becomes limp and mushy. For all their greatness, fried foods don’t store well and should be enjoyed on the first go.
