When Amazon announced a button that could be used to reorder your toilet paper right from your bathroom, the second you notice you are running low on April 1st 2015, many consumer’s thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Humorous as the idea may be, it was no joke. Amazon is continuing to roll out it’s dash button pilot program that allows customers to reorder common items with the push of a single button.

Running low on coffee or filters? Imagine being able to push a button on your coffee maker and have new beans and filters delivered to your doorstep two days later. This could be huge if it catches on though it’s obvious limitation is that currently you need separate buttons for each product. Surely consumers, aren’t ready to have individual buttons for each product that might conceivably want to re-order from Amazon. But if this innovative technology improves, it could be huge across many sectors including appliances.

Whirlpool is said to be releasing a new washing machine this year with Amazon’s technology built right in. Running low on detergent? Press the button and viola: two days later there’s Tide at your doorstep.  With You may  never need to go to your local market again!  One thing this appliance repair man is looking forward to: dash buttons for refrigerator and ice maker water filters.

Dash buttons for Amazon have batteries that last for hours, and will be delivered free to consumers. For now, the program is by invitation only. For Amazon, there is another benefit to on-the-spot one touch ordering: your data. In today’s day and age big data means big money and being able to detect exactly how and when consumers decide to reorder a recurring product could prove to be priceless.
